West Greenland

Traditional Greenlandic Music

The musical voyage of this CD-series ends in West Greenland.

Here the missionaries already arrived already in 1752 and soon stopped the shamanistic drum song tradition. Instead, the church taught people to sing choir and western songs.

Moreover, the whalers came from Europe and brought polka dance music – accordions and violins.

WEST presents a more western music style, but definitely with a unique and charming Greenlandic “twist”. 39 recordings from South to North Greenland, made by numerous collectors in 1906 – 1909 – 1912 -1914 – 1935 – 1949 – 1950 – 1951 – 1955 – 1960 - 1963 – 1965 and 1986.
